National Assembly celebrates the 76th Constitution Day

- Speaker calls for reflecting on the spirit of the Constituent Assembly and the aspirations

         enshrined in the Constitution

- Ceremony held on July 17 featured over 500 attendees including key national figures

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker Woo Won-shik) on July 17 held an event at the National Assembly to commemorate the 76th Constitution Day, celebrating the establishment of the Constitution and reflecting on its history and significance.

The ceremony was attended by Speaker Woo Won-shik, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Cho Hee-dae, President of the Constitutional Court Lee Jong-seok, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, Chairman of the National Election Commission Roh Tae-ak, and Chairman of the Board of Audit and Inspection Choi Jae-hyung. Over 500 attendees — including former National Assembly Speakers, party leaders, parliamentary floor leaders, members of the National Assembly, key figures from the legislative, judicial, and executive branches, members of the diplomatic corps in Korea, members of the Parliamentarians’ Society of the Republic of Korea, and descendants of Constituent Assembly Members — participated in the event, which was broadcast live on KBS 1TV and National Assembly TV.

The ceremony comprised a national ceremony, celebratory performances, the presentation of appreciation plaques, a commemorative address by the chairman of the Parliamentarians’ Society, an address by the National Assembly Speaker, and the recitation of the Constitution Day song. Awards of appreciation were presented to former National Assembly members Heo Kyeong-man (member of the 10th-14th National Assembly, former Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly), Kim Dong-joo (member of the 12th, 13th and 15th National Assembly), and Kim Bang-rim (member of the 16th National Assembly), for their significant contributions to parliamentary and national development.

In his celebratory speech, Speaker Woo Won-shik proposed to political parties that “with the goal of holding a national referendum during the 2026 local elections, let us push ahead with constitutional amendments as much as we can agree on.” He also extended an official invitation to President Yoon Suk-yeol to hold dialogue on constitutional amendments.

The Speaker also advocated the promotion of a “social grand compromise, a package deal” to mediate and resolve conflicts surrounding socio-economic policies that have a profound impact on the lives of citizens. He underscored the National Assembly’s active role in seeking international support and cooperation for peace on the Korean Peninsula and laying the groundwork for peace through diplomacy.

The ceremony concluded with a themed video that reflects on the value of the Constitution and the National Assembly’s commitment to advancing alongside the Korean people. This was followed by a choral performance of “My Country, My People,” led by musical actress Jeong Sun-ah and a choir, featuring a video backdrop of military personnel, police officers, and civil servants dedicated to serving the nation at its most extreme frontiers. The event wrapped up with all attendees signing the Constitution Day Song.
