Members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker Woo Won-shik) attended the 1st Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the P20. Hosted by the Brazilian House of Representatives, it was held in Maceió, Brazil, from July 1 to 2.

The Meeting of Women Parliamentarians of the P20 was initiated by Brazil, host country of the upcoming 10th G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit (P20) scheduled for November, to promote women’s political participation. National Assembly members Lee Jae-jung (leader, Democratic Party of Korea), Lim Mi-ae (Democratic Party of Korea), and Kang Kyung-sook (Rebuilding Korea Party) comprised the Korean delegation at the conference.

* The G20 Parliamentary Speakers' Summit, or P20 was established in Canada in 2010 with the purpose of seeking joint parliamentary responses to major global issues such as climate change and financial crises, and supporting the international cooperation efforts of G20 leaders through parliamentary diplomacy.

During the conference, held under the theme 'Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,’ participants held discussions on topics such as: ▲ defining climate justice for women and girls and promoting sustainable development; ▲ empowering women; and ▲ reducing inequalities and enhancing women’s economic capabilities.

The Korean delegation listened to presentations from delegations and panelists from diverse countries. Through their remarks at different sessions, they underlined the importance of reducing inequalities affecting women in an effort to promote sustainable development in the climate change era.

In the first session on day 1, National Assembly member Lee Jae-jung introduced Korean legislation that aims to overcome the climate crisis and highlighted the need for measures to protect women, children, and vulnerable groups amid climate change. She stressed the importance of female participation in actions to address climate change and achieve gender equality.

In the second session on day 2, National Assembly member Kang Kyung-sook presented gender-sensitive Korean laws and policies that aim to realize equal participation of women. She also called for international solidarity to improve women’s social status and achieve gender equality.

In the third session later that day, Assembly member Lim Mi-ae pointed to the lack of institutional guarantees for female farmers despite their increased social participation, while stressing the need for legislative efforts to enhance the status of women, who are vulnerable to climate change, to ensure the sustainability of humankind.

Outside the sessions, the Korean delegation engaged in parliamentary diplomacy. They held bipartite meetings with U.S. Representatives Young Kim and Sydney Kamlager-Dove to discuss deepening parliamentary exchanges relating to the Korea-U.S. alliance and economic cooperation. That same day, they shared view on expanding women’s political participation with Brazilian Representative Soraya Santos, and the following day with Brazilian Representative Maria Rosas.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea plans to continue to participate in the P20 Women’s conference to explore responses to major international issues through in-depth discussions with national delegations and to actively engage in parliamentary diplomacy in order to foster solidarity with female parliamentarians from various countries.
