         relations

The Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly held a meeting on June 27 with La Nyalla Mattalitti, Speaker of the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia, at the National Assembly to discuss ways to expand bilateral economic cooperation by supporting Korean investment and addressing Indonesia’s domestic challenges.

First, Speaker Woo expressed his condolences on behalf of the Korean people to the victims and their families who perished during the Hajj pilgrimage, adding that “Indonesia is the only special strategic partner to Korea in the Southeast Asian region, and the Korean people also recognize its importance.”

He continued by saying, “Trade volume between Korea and Indonesia surpassed $20 billion in 2022, and Korean companies have been continually expanding their presence in Indonesia, with investment reaching a record high of $2.4 billion in 2021. I hope that we can further enhance trade and economic cooperation by utilizing the comprehensive economic partnership agreement that went into effect in January.”

Woo cited several large-scale investments in the mass production of electric vehicles and battery cells, made by Korean firms in Indonesia, which are contributing to fostering an electric vehicle ecosystem. The Speaker urged “keen interest and support from the Indonesian parliament to create incentives for Korean firms to make bolder investments.”

Speaker Woo also asked that efforts be made to ensure that Indonesia’s import volume restriction system does not hinder bilateral trade. “As the Speaker and members of the Senate represent each region of Indonesia, I would be most grateful if you will listen carefully to the challenges faced by Korean companies,” he said.

Speaker La Nyalla noted that Korea has been more successful at nation building than Indonesia, which gained independence the same year as Korea, and attributed its success to Korea’s prioritization of human resources development. He expressed hopes that his visit to Korea would provide valuable information on developing his country’s manpower.

Indonesia’s upper house speaker also offered his condolences for the June 25 battery factory fire in Korea that killed more than 20 workers. Woo responded, “Sadly, many foreign workers lost their precious lives in the accident. As many Indonesians are in Korea, we will establish a system to ensure that they can work safely.”

Speaker Woo concluded by underscoring the importance of bilateral inter-parliamentary exchange, stating “We shall swiftly establish the Korea-Indonesia Parliamentary Friendship Group, which is central to this exchange, to strengthen our relationship with the Indonesian Parliament.”

Attendees at the meeting included Rahman Hadi, Secretary General of the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia; Fachrul Razi, Chairman of Committee 1 of the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia; Habib Ali Alwi, Fahira Idris, Andi Ihsan, Intsiawati Ayus, and Riri Damayanti John Latief, members of the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia; and Zelda Wulan Kartika, Chargé d'Affaires Ad Interim of the Republic of Indonesia to the Republic of Korea. From the Korean side, attendees included Kim Gi-hyeon, Kim Min-seok, Seo Sam-seok, and Park Sung-min, members of the National Assembly; Baek Jae-hyun, Secretary General of the National Assembly; Jo O-seop, Chief of Staff to the Speaker; Park Tae-seo, Senior Secretary for Public Relations to the Speaker; Jeong Woon-jin, Ambassadorial Advisor to the Speaker for Foreign Affairs; Hwang Seung-gi, Director General of the International Affairs and Protocol Bureau; and Cho Yoon-jae, Chief of Staff to the Secretary General.
