Speaker Kim Jin-pyo joins early voting,

calling on the people to cast ballots

- Speaker stresses the importance of judging politically incorrect decisions and selecting suitable politicians

for the development of Korean politics

- Pledges to engage in efforts to achieve tangible results through the end of his term

On April 5, the first day of early voting for the April 10 general election, the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo cast his ballot at the Yeouido-dong Community Center.

After voting, Speaker Kim told reporters, “Korea’s voter turnout needs to be as high as it is in Europe for democracy to better develop and become rooted.” He urged people to actively participate in voting, especially when they are dissatisfied or disappointed with politics. “By doing so, competent politicians capable of resolving the people’s problems and the nation’s essential tasks will be sent to the National Assembly,” he noted. “Judging politically incorrect decisions and selecting good politicians for the development of Korean politics is the way forward for our country and its people,” he emphasized.

Speaker Kim then expressed regret that the 21st National Assembly had failed to fulfill its proper role from the people’s perspective. Referring to his opening remarks at the Feb. 19 plenary meeting — that the remaining three and a half months of the term was the last opportunity to create a high point for the 21st National Assembly — he reiterated: “Until the end of this term, on May 29, after the general election, the ruling and the opposition parties should reach a consensus and draw up the bills necessary for people’s lives and the development of politics and the nation.” He then pledged efforts to spur negotiations between parties and conclude the 21st National Assembly with productive outcomes by the end of his term.
