The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker Kim Jin-pyo) on December 28 approved the appointment of National Assembly member Baek Jae-hyun as 36th National Assembly Secretary General. During the 3rd plenary meeting of the 411th extraordinary session, the motion to appoint Baek, a third-term member, as National Assembly Secretary General passed with 260 out of 284 votes in favor (a 91% approval rate).

In his acceptance speech, the newly appointed Secretary General stated, “I will support Speaker Kim Jin-pyo to better conclude the 21st National Assembly by giving hope to the people and will also do my best to sustain the legislative activities of assembly members based on my legislative experience.”

At the ensuing inauguration ceremony, Baek noted, “The Republic of Korea is facing challenges such as a low birth rate, slow economic growth, and security crises. The National Assembly, with a public trust rate of 24.1 percent, must transform itself into a place for making policy, not a battlefield of politics, to regain the people’s trust.”

Addressing the National Assembly Secretariat’s duty to support Assembly members, he urged efforts toward more productive legislative activity, pledging to provide data based on an analysis of legislative effects and to support Assembly members’ legislative activities based on expertise and rationality.

Baek referred to establishing the Sejong National Assembly Hall as “a decision that meets the needs of the times for balanced regional development.” He added that the challenge of today is to draw up measures to effectively operate the Assembly and help Assembly members and staff better adapt to the legislative setting.
