The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo joined a commemorative tree planting ceremony on November 21 in Indonesia during a visit to a mangrove forest there. ‘Mangrove’ collectively refers to the forests and trees of tropical and subtropical coastal and estuarine wetlands, which are known to have the most efficient carbon storage on Earth. Indonesia is home to the world’s largest expanse of mangroves (3.5 million hectares), but about half of it is damaged. Since 2006, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) has been restoring disturbed mangrove forests, particularly in areas damaged by the 2004 tsunami.
