The National Assembly Secretariat, led by Secretary General Lee Kwang-jae, will embark on a high-level policy studies course on Nov. 9 entitled “Emerging International and Security Situations” targeting National Assembly members and senior parliamentary officials.

This advanced course is designed to monitor international situations and security-related agendas that South Korea should contemplate and respond to amid rapidly changing international conditions including in Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East regions and technical developments such as the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI). The course will span four weeks starting November 9 with sessions taking place on Thursday mornings.

The first lecture was delivered by Park Cheol-hee, Chancellor of the National Diplomatic Academy, on “Korea-U.S.-Japan Cooperation in the Era of Complex Transitions.” Subsequent lectures will cover topics such as the status of and responses to emerging cybercrimes such as the dark web, issues and policies related to generative AI, and the status of and responses to transnational crimes including new kinds of narcotics.

Secretary General Lee Kwang-jae explained the course’s purpose by saying, “It will provide an opportunity to examine issues that the National Assembly and the entire country should consider in the era of generative AI and global transitions.” Underscoring the significance of enhancing the policy capabilities of National Assembly members, he suggested that “The level of policy knowledge of National Assembly members and staff will directly impact the level of agenda setting for the National Assembly and the nation.”

This high-level course for the National Assembly aims to improve the knowledge and legislative-policy capabilities of lawmakers and senior parliamentary officials. Starting with the first Humanities course offered in 2011, a total of 32 courses have been conducted at the National Assembly to date, covering key national issues and agendas relating to future national strategies, economics, and finance.
