Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Kim Jin-pyo met with the visiting Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) delegation on April 3 at the Speaker’s reception room. The Speaker delivered the Assembly’s ‘Resolution on Supporting the Successful Bidding and Hosting of World Expo 2030 Busan,’ while requesting the BIE’s support for Busan’s bid to host the international event. The resolution was unanimously adopted at the plenary session held on the morning of the same day.

The National Assembly set up banners reading ‘The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea Supports the Hosting of the 2030 World Expo in Busan’ on the walls of the main building and on light poles throughout the Assembly complex. Speaker Kim warmly welcomed the delegation with open arms.

“At the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, all parties have a burning desire to witness Busan’s hosting of World Expo 2030. If the city is designated as the venue for World Expo 2030, the National Assembly will provide all necessary legal and budgetary support to the city to host the international event by enacting a special law,” Kim said during the meeting.

“At the heart of Northeast Asia and at the crossroads of Eurasia and the Pacific Rim, Busan is renowned as a transportation logistics hub with optimal infrastructure, and in addition, it boasts a world-class tourism infrastructure, develops and hosts cultural contents such as cinema and gaming, and has experience as a venue for large international events,” he said, adding: “If you look around Busan tomorrow, you’ll notice Busan residents’ strong desire to host the event.”

The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea leader Lee Jae-myung remarked, “Busan is an iconic city that can capably present the exhibition theme, which is ‘Transforming our world, navigating toward a better future’. The Korean people have high expectations and aspirations for Busan’s hosting of World Expo 2030, and the delegation will be able to see during their visit that the city is well-prepared to host the event.”

Ruling People Power Party leader Kim Gi-hyeon underlined, “Refugees during the 1950-1953 Korean War forged a success story while living in Busan. For this city, with its history of facing and overcoming challenges, the parliament is providing bipartisan support.”

Speaker Kim then led the plenary session attended by the delegation, and the National Assembly unanimously adopted a ‘Resolution on Supporting the Successful Bidding and Hosting of World Expo 2030 Busan.’ A copy of the resolution pledging full bipartisan support for Busan’s bid was then delivered to the delegation.

Attendees at the meeting included Patrick Specht, President of the BIE Administration and Budget Committee; Dimitri Kerkentzes, Secretary-General of the BIE; Kevin Isaac, High Commissioner of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Kingdom; Manuel Salchli of Switzerland; and Ferdinand Nagy of Romania. From the Korean side, attendees included Kim Young-joo and Chung Woo-taik, Deputy Speakers of the National Assembly; Park Hong-keun, Floor Leader of the Democratic Party of Korea; Joo Ho-young, Floor Leader of the People Power Party; Park Jae-ho, Chairman of the Special Committee on Support for Hosting the World Expo 2030 Busan; Lee Kwang-jae, Secretary General of the National Assembly; and Park Kyung-mee, Chief of Staff to the Speaker.
