Speaker Kim Jin-pyo meets with President of El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly Castro

- Speaker Kim requests support for Busan’s hosting of World Expo 2030 and pledges to share Korea’s development experience and expertise through the international event
- Legislative Assembly President Castro pledges support for Busan’s bid, citing the countries’ six-decade-long bilateral relationship

Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Kim Jin-pyo on May 8 met with President of the Legislative Assembly of El Salvador Ernesto Castro, at the Assembly complex. The two discussed ways to develop cooperation between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of El Salvador as well as Busan’s bid to host the World Expo 2030. The visit by Castro of El Salvador, a member state of the Bureau of International Exhibitions (BIE), was arranged by the Korea Foundation to support Busan’s bid to host World Expo 2030, explore bilateral cooperation projects, and promote friendly relations between the two countries.

Speaker Kim expressed gratitude for the President’s earlier congratulatory remarks by saying: “Thank you for announcing the statement by the El Salvadoran Legislative Assembly last year celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two nations.” He cited South Korea’s efforts to expand cooperation with Central American countries, such as through the Central American Integration System (SICA), and expressed expectations for closer bilateral ties with El Salvador, a key cooperation partner to Korea and the chair of SICA.

※ The Central American Integration System (SICA) is the institutional framework for the largest political and economic integration network in Central America, established by the nations of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama in 1993, and subsequently joined by Belize and the Dominican Republic as full members.

In reference to economic and developmental cooperation, Speaker Kim requested parliamentary support from El Salvador, saying: “It would be great if the [Salvadoran] Legislative Assembly provides support for and interest in improving the business and activities of Korean companies and Korean citizens in the nation, amid expanding bilateral trade and Korea’s investment in local fabric and clothing businesses following the enactment of a free trade agreement between the ROK and Central America in 2021.”

Speaker Kim also asked for El Salvador’s support for Busan’s bid to host World Expo 2030. “Both the public and private sectors are making all-out efforts to bring this international event to Korea. In hosting the exhibition, we will present a sustainable vision for challenging issues such as health risks, social polarization caused by technology and climate change, and share Korea’s experience and expertise in achieving economic development,” he said.

President Castro responded by saying that El Salvador also hopes to further develop the bilateral relationship, while pledging his support for Busan’s bid to become host city for World Expo 2030.

The President also expressed his hope for a visit by National Assembly Members to El Salvador before touring the Plenary Chamber with Speaker Kim.

The meeting attendees included El Salvador Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Jaime José López Badia from the Salvadoran side; and Chief of Staff to the Speaker Park Kyung-mee, Senior Secretary for Public Relations Ko Jae-hak, Ambassadorial Advisor to the Speaker for Foreign Affairs Jeong Woon-jin, and Director General of the International Affairs and Protocol Bureau Hwang Seung-gi from the Korean side.
