Speaker Kim embarks on official visit to Vietnam and Indonesia

- Will hold a series of meetings with Vietnam’s four highest-ranking officials to add momentum to economic, defense, and development cooperation
- Will attend a ceremony to celebrate the launch of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science & Technology, Korea’s largest-ever grant aid program for Vietnam
- Will explore ways to expand cooperation on Indonesia’s supply chain and defense and share Korea’s experience of building Sejong City
- Will engage in full-scale diplomatic efforts to gain support from major Asean nations for Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo

National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo embarks on a 10-day official visit to Vietnam and Indonesia from January 12 to 21, 2023. Through his visit to these leading Asean countries, Kim will seek ways to strengthen cooperation on the two countries’ key issues, such as increased exchange in the economic, defense, and human resources sectors and the relocation of Indonesia’s capital city, as well as securing support for Busan’s bid to host 2030 World Expo.

Speaker Kim will first visit Vietnam, until the 17th, at the request of Vuong Dinh Hue, Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Vietnam — a relationship that has recently been elevated to a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership.’ Korea is Vietnam’s largest investor and trade between the two has leaped by 160 times over the past 30 years, helping Vietnam emerge as Korea’s third-largest trade partner and become its top development cooperation partner.

Kim will reinforce strategic partnerships in areas of the economy such as finance, construction, and scientific technology, as well as in the marine security and defense sectors, through a series of meetings with Vietnam’s four highest-ranking officials including the General Secretary of the Communist Party, the President, the Prime Minister, and the Chairman of the National Assembly. He then will attend a ceremony to celebrate the opening of the Vietnam-Korea Institute of Science & Technology (VKIST), Korea’s largest-ever grant aid project for Vietnam, which is modeled after the Korea Institute of Science & Technology, and where he will express his resolve to build momentum for enhanced development cooperation between the two countries.

The Speaker will discuss ways to upgrade the Korea-Asean relationship to that of a ‘comprehensive strategic partnership’ with Vietnam, which serves as the coordinator for the 2021-2024 ‘ROK-Asean Dialogue.’ He will also engage in diplomacy to win Vietnam’s support for Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo.

Kim then travels to Indonesia on January 18 at the invitation of Puan Maharani, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Indonesia, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and explore ways to develop and expand their ‘special strategic partnership’ and reinforce cooperation on key issues between the two countries, such as defense collaboration and the relocation of Indonesia’s capital city.

In his meetings with high-ranking Indonesian officials, Speaker Kim plans to do his best to bolster cooperation in the economic sector — on supply chains and resources development — and in the defense sector on the development of next-generation fighter jets. As for the capital city relocation, a vital issue in Indonesia, Kim plans to move beyond intergovernmental cooperation to seek forays by private enterprises while sharing Korea’s experience of developing the Sejong Special Self-Governing City.

In addition, the Speaker will visit the local factories of Korean companies that have advanced into Vietnam and Indonesia, such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Hyundai Motor, and hold face-to-face talks with community leaders to express the National Assembly’s gratitude for their hard work at establishing friendly relations with major Asean countries and pledge the National Assembly’s efforts to support local Korean communities there.

The Speaker will be accompanied by National Assembly members Park Kwang-on, Chun Jae-soo and Kim Hoi-jae from the Democratic Party of Korea and Yoo Sang-bum and Lee Jong-seong from the People Power Party; Senior Secretary for Public Relations Ko Jae-hak; Secretary for Policy Planning Seo Jin-woong; Ambassadorial Advisor to the Speaker for Foreign Affairs Cho Koo-rae; and Director General of the International Affairs and Protocol Bureau Hwang Seung-gi.
