National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo of the Republic of Korea met with Marketa Pekarova Adamova, the Czech Republic’s Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, on March 23 at the National Assembly reception room. They discussed ways to cooperate in the nuclear power and hydrogen sectors and Busan’s bid to host World Expo 2030. The Czech delegation, comprising high-ranking government officials and an economic mission, planned to visit Busan and tour its exhibition facilities later in their visit to Korea.

Speaker Kim noted, “The two countries, under a strategic partnership forged in Asia for the first time in 2015, have sustained an optimal relationship built on close cooperation since establishing diplomatic ties in 1990. Amid challenging geopolitical conditions, we have maintained our national identities, developed our cultures, and introduced democracy at around the same time. With our similar economic structures centered on manufacturing and exports, there is great potential for a strengthened relationship.”

On the topic of nuclear power cooperation, Speaker Kim said, “Korea has proved its competitiveness with the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant project in the United Arab Emirates, calling on 40 years of plant construction expertise. I hope that Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. will be named the preferred bidder for building the fifth unit at the Dukovany nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic.”

Kim underscored that “Korea’s experience at developing small modular reactors, and Korean companies’ strengths in reactor design and construction, will be applied to construct the new small modular reactor,” adding that “Korea hopes for close cooperation with the Czech Republic.”

On cooperation in the hydrogen sector, Kim said, “Hydrogen, as a new growth engine, is an efficient means of decarbonization in the fields of power generation, industry, and transportation, and I hope Korean companies will be able to contribute to establishing a hydrogen ecosystem in the Czech Republic through their efforts to supply commercial hydrogen vehicles.”

Speaker Kim also asked for the Czech Republic’s support for Busan’s bid to host World Expo 2030. He said, “Busan is a transport logistics hub with the world’s second largest trans-shipment port, as well as an optimal place equipped with a tourism infrastructure, cutting-edge technology, cultural richness, and experience at hosting large international events. Faced with the challenges around the world, Korea aims to present a vision of sustainable development by hosting World Expo 2030 in Busan, while also strengthening business cooperation with the Czech Republic. I hope Speaker Adamova will be able to experience the city’s competitiveness during her visit to Busan.”

Speaker Adamova responded that she also expects expanded cooperation with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. in the energy and science technology sectors and pledged to convey her experience to relevant departments of the Czech government. She also expressed high expectations of the resumption of direct flights between the two countries following their suspension during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Addressing the geopolitical situation on the Korean Peninsula, Speaker Kim cited escalating tensions due to the North’s repeated missile tests including of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) even amidst chronic food shortages there. “Should the North resume provocations with a seventh nuclear test, the international community must unite on a decisive response. I hope the Czech parliament will support the South’s efforts to stop the North’s provocations and return to dialogue on denuclearization,” he said.

Speaker Adamova made clear that she and her parliament fully support South Korea and expect extended collaboration in cyber security. She then invited Kim to attend the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, scheduled to be held in October, to condemn Russia and support Ukraine.

Speaker Kim responded by saying, “Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine is clearly a violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, and Ukraine’s sovereignty should be respected. The Korean government will join the international community to put an end to the Russia-Ukraine war and bring peace there, and will positively consider the request to attend the conference.”

Following the meeting, Speakers Kim and Adamova moved to the National Assembly’s Sarangjae hall and continued their discussion on practical economic cooperation measures over lunch. They were joined by Nexen Corp. Vice Chairman & CEO Kang Ho-chan, Hyundai Motor Co. Vice President Kim Dong-wook, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power CEO Hwang Joo-ho, and Doosan Enerbility Co. President & COO Jung Yeon-in.

“Both countries have developed a relationship based on the strong will of their people and consensus on universal values, and we are now going to explore cooperation in the fields of nuclear power and defense to pursue a common prosperity. Once again, I hope you witness Busan’s superior infrastructure and competitive strengths as a venue for international events and ask for your support for Busan’s bid to host World Expo 2030, ” Kim reiterated at the luncheon meeting.

Speaker Adamova responded positively, expressing her gratitude for Korea’s welcoming and successful meeting with Kim and expectations of an enhanced relationship between the two nations.
