Speaker holds meeting with UAE President

Speaker Kim Jin-pyo meets with United Arab Emirates’ President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan
- Speaker and UAE President express their hopes for a bilateral leaders’ summit and parliamentary exchanges

Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Kim Jin-pyo, on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), met with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan at the Qasr Al Watan presidential palace in Abu Dhabi on the 15th (local time) of October, 2022 and discussed ways to develop the countries’ bilateral relationship. The meeting was arranged at the request of President Mohammed just before the speaker left the country after finishing his official schedule. Speaker Kim and President Mohammed shared their views on ways to promote communication and exchange among the countries’ high-ranking officials and to promote practical cooperation in various sectors such as defense.
In May, Speaker Kim celebrated the inauguration of President Mohammed and shared President Yoon Suk-yeol’s greetings. He proposed holding a summit between the two presidents, both taking the helm this year, as early as possible and to seek an upgraded strategic partnership between the two countries.
President Mohammed also congratulated Kim on being elected as Korea’s Speaker of the National Assembly and extended wishes for his success. President Mohammed expressed his gratitude for President Yoon’s regards and conveyed his wish for the continued, vigorous development of Korea and the Korean people. He underlined that the two countries will be able to maintain their close relationship with the attention and support of their countries’ leadership and should continue holding exchanges between their leaders and cooperation between parliaments.
Speaker Kim and President Mohammed also discussed the regional situation faced by the two nations including issues relating to Iran and North Korea and agreed on the need to promote defense cooperation for response to both short- and long-term risk.
Speaker Kim expressed his wish for President Mohammed’s visit to the National Assembly of Korea as well if he pays an official visit to the country. The meeting on the 15th was reported on by Emirati media including Al-Ittihad.
President Mohammed is the third son of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, the first President of the UAE. He was the de facto ruler of Abu Dhabi on behalf of the hospitalized President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed and became the third president after Sheikh Khalifa died in May. President Mohammed has visited Korea five times. The official meeting spanned 40 minutes beginning at 5:30 p.m. (local time).
Speaker Kim’s meeting with President Mohammed completed his eight-day schedule of official visits to Ethiopia, Rwanda, and the UAE and he arrived in Seoul on the 16th.
