National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo embarks today on a seven-day official visit to Poland and Romania from August 5 to 11, 2022. The visit represents the speaker’s first overseas business trip since taking office as the speaker of the second half of the 21st National Assembly session.

Speaker Kim will first visit Poland, from August 5 to 7, to seek upgraded strategic partnerships and cooperation with the nation, which is Korea’s largest trade partner in Central and Eastern Europe as well as a core production base for Korean businesses operating in Europe. He will then visit Romania from August 7 to 10 to advocate for Korean businesses bidding to participate in Romania’s key national projects.

On the 5th, Speaker Kim will meet in Warsaw with Elżbieta Witek, speaker of the lower house of the Polish parliament. They will discuss Korea’s recent arms exports to the country, including a deal recently signed between Korean defense contractors and the Polish Ministry of National Defense to export battle tanks, self-propelled howitzers, and light fighter jets.

Speaker Kim will also seek support for Korean contractors who wish to partake in Polish projects to build a new airport and a nuclear power plant, which fall under Poland’s Energy Policy 2040. He will then meet with Korean nationals living in Poland to hear about their challenges and discuss ways to address them.

On the 7th, Speaker Kim will travel to Romania and meet with the country’s ministers of energy, research, innovation and digitalization, culture, and education in Bucharest to further deepen relations between the two nations, which were upgraded to a strategic partnership in 2008.

The speaker will also meet with Alina-Stefania Gorghiu, acting speaker of Romania's Senate, to ask for Romania's support for Korean businesses seeking to take part in a project to modernize Romania’s nuclear power plants. He will then hold phone calls with the chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Romania’s Senate and Chamber of Deputies, and the chairperson of the Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, to strengthen parliamentary exchange.

Before completing his official overseas trip, Speaker Kim will meet with President of the Chamber of Deputies Marcel Ciolacu the same day to seek Romania's support for Korea's bid to host the 2030 World Expo and efforts to foster peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Speaker Kim will be accompanied by lawmaker Chung Woon-chun of the People Power Party, lawmakers Back Hye-ryun and Shin Yeong-dae of the Democratic Party of Korea, Speaker Kim’s Executive Officer Park Kyung-mi, Senior Secretary for Public Relations Ko Jae-hak, Ambassador Cho Ku-rae, and Director-General of International Affairs Kwak Hyeon-jun.
