Speaker Woo Won-shik visits 2024 National Assembly Ulchi Exercise site
- Speaker emphasizes the need for an effective emergency preparedness plan for the National Assembly
given the recent tensions on the Korean Peninsula
The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik visited the Comprehensive Situation Room and Cybersecurity Center of the National Assembly on August 19 to inspect its emergency preparedness posture and commend staff for their efforts during the Ulchi civil defense exercise period. The 2024 National Assembly Ulchi Exercise will run for four days from August 19 to 22.
Speaker Woo received reports on the initial briefing and schedule for the Ulchi Exercise at the Comprehensive Situation Room. “Given the recent intensification of the U.S.-China power competition and the heightened tensions between North and South Korea due to North Korea's provocative actions with balloon-borne waste, it is necessary to remain vigilant,” he noted, urging a thorough review of the effectiveness of the National Assembly’s emergency preparedness plan and the development of improvement measures through practical training.
Speaker Woo then moved to the Cybersecurity Center and expressed his appreciation to the staff for their hard work, saying: “The National Assembly generates vast amounts of data and interacts with the public throughout its operations. I urge you to protect the information and enhance public trust by safeguarding the cybersecurity at the frontlines.”
