- Speaker deplores the tragic deaths from overwork, urging the company’s apology and
government measures
Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Woo Won-shik met with the families of Coupang workers who died from overwork, including the late Jeong Seul-gi and the late Jang Deok-jun.
During the meeting at his office, Speaker Woo expressed his condolences to the families, mourned the deceased victims of excessive work, and lamented the conditions that oppress precious lives from overwork.
He then urged Coupang to take responsibility and offer an earnest apology, while calling on the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Employment and Labor to assess the working conditions of delivery and logistics center workers and devise appropriate follow-up measures.
Park Seok-woon, co-chair of the Countermeasures Committee on Overwork Deaths, who attended the meeting, proposed that Speaker Woo facilitate social consensus involving delivery and logistics workers, companies, and the government in regard to early-morning and late-night deliveries.
