an accurate fact-finding probe
Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Woo Won-shik on July 2 met with the bereaved family of the young worker who died while at work at the Jeonju Paper mill.
During the meeting, held at the Speaker’s office, Speaker Woo mourned the victim and consoled the family, while expressing his sorrow by saying: “Even though two weeks have passed since the young worker’s death, the investigation and accurate fact-finding mission have not been carried out.”
Speaker Woo emphasized, “We must ensure that no more young dreams are cut short at industrial work sites,” and urged the company and the Ministry of Employment and Labor to “respond positively in ensuring a prompt, accurate investigation of the case.”
Before meeting with the Speaker, the bereaved family of the deceased teen worker held a press conference with the Democratic Party of Korea’s Euljiro Committee, the Progressive Party, the Basic Income Party, and the Jeonbuk Headquarters of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions. They called for a thorough investigation of the incident, enactment of measures to prevent such an incident from recurring, a sincere apology from the company, and appropriate follow-up actions.
