Speaker Woo won-shik sends letter to Speaker of the German Bundestag
requesting preservation of 'Statue of Peace'

- Discussions are ongoing on removal of Statue of Peace, installed in Berlin’s Mitte district in Sept. 2020
- Speaker Woo expressed hopes for the German Bundestag Speaker’s support for its preservation, citing it as a symbol of
         women’s rights and peace

The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik on June 21 sent a letter to his German counterpart Bärbel Bas, Speaker of Germany’s lower house of parliament, calling for the parliament’s attention to and support for preserving the ‘Statue of Peace.’ Speaker Woo also expressed concerns about ongoing discussions about its removal.

The Statue of Peace, installed in Berlin’s Mitte District in September 2020, symbolizes the Korean girls who were sexually enslaved during World War II by the Imperial Japanese military. It represents the painful history of women who were sacrificed in the midst of war and conveys hope that such events will never occur again.

Speaker Woo expressed grave concerns about the ongoing discussions about removing the Statue of Peace, which are occurring despite widespread support for the statue from local councils and the public. He requested the German Bundestag Speaker’s keen attention and strong support for ensuring that the statue, which has contributed to growing awareness of the importance of women’s rights and peace worldwide, remains in place.
