Woo Won-sik elected as Speaker
of the 22nd National Assembly for the first-half term
The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea conducted elections on June 5 for the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the 22nd National Assembly for the first-half term. The elections were held during the first plenary meeting of the 415th extraordinary session. Five-term lawmaker Woo Won-shik from the Democratic Party of Korea (Nowon-gu Gap of Seoul Metropolitan Government) was elected as Speaker of the 22nd National Assembly for the first-half term, with 190 out of 192 votes.
In his acceptance speech, Speaker Woo stated, “The 22nd National Assembly begins its term amid overlapping and interconnected crises: a crisis of trust, a crisis of public welfare, a crisis of legislative authority, and the need for constitutional reform.” He proposed three approaches to navigating the crises wisely and effectively: ▲adhering to agreed standards even if opinions differ; ▲ enhancing field legislative activities; and ▲ transforming the National Assembly into a platform for social dialogue.
Woo also addressed the President and the administration, underscoring that the government should “respect the legislative authority of the National Assembly” and that the President should be “cautious about requesting [bill] reconsideration.” He urged the ruling and opposition floor leaderships to “complete the formation of the standing committees within the deadlines set by the National Assembly Act.”
In closing, Speaker Woo pledged, “For a National Assembly that is close to people’s lives, and for a National Assembly that the citizens can rely on, I will make every effort every moment. I will dedicate everything to creating a National Assembly that takes the hands of the people.”
