at the United Nations

- Held over two days in early February in New York

- Attended by National Assembly members Choi Youn-suk (Democratic Party of Korea), the delegation head; and

         Lee Tahney (People Power Party)

- Discussions held on theme 'Putting an end to conflicts: Prescriptions for a peaceful future'

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker: Kim Jin-pyo) attended the 2024 Parliamentary Hearing, jointly held by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations in New York, United States, on February 8-9. The Korean delegation comprised National Assembly members Choi Youn-suk (Democratic Party of Korea), the delegation head; and Lee Tahney (People Power Party).

The meeting, held under the theme ‘Putting an end to conflicts: Prescriptions for a peaceful future,’ consisted of seven sessions covering topics relating to conflict prevention, such as: ▲ enhancing peace and security; ▲ responding to climate change; ▲ promoting human rights among women and children; ▲ the roles of parliamentary diplomacy; and ▲ the use of emerging technology.

The Korean delegation listened attentively to presentations from the various delegations and expert panels from different countries. During its speeches at each session, Korea’s delegates underlined the role of parliaments in establishing peace and security amid international conflict.

During the fourth session of the first day, Assembly member Lee pointed to the need for appropriate budget allocation and international solidarity and cooperation as part of an effective response to the climate crisis that has accelerated conflict situations, and urged joint efforts in ensuring climate security.

During the fifth session of the second day, Assembly member and delegation head Choi discussed Korean laws that aim to promote the rights of women and children and called for an expansion of parliamentary-level legislative and financial support for women and children in conflict situations.

The Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations brings together members of parliaments and United Nations officials every February, at UN headquarters in New York, to exchange views on an array of topics. It has been held since the IPU and the UN forged a partnership in 1996.

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea plans to continue participating in the Parliamentary Hearing at the United Nations to introduce Korea’s legislative and policy cases, while engaging in in-depth discussions to tackle pending international issues.
