Members of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker: Kim Jin-pyo) attended the 35th Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Legislative Exchange Program (TLEP), which was held on February 7 by video conference.

The Korean delegation included National Assembly members Lee Jae-jung, the delegation head (Democratic Party of Korea), and Choi Hyung-du (People Power Party). The United States was represented by Congressmen Mark Takano (Democratic Party) and Adrian Smith (Republican Party). Japan’s representatives were Congresswomen Kunico Inoguchi (Liberal Democratic Party) and Kaname Tajima (Constitutional Democratic Party).

The meeting was held to discuss the political situations in each country and the global geopolitical outlook. Delegations from the three countries delved into topics such as: ▲ the political situations and legislative issues in their respective countries; ▲ humanitarian issues stemming from the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict; ▲supply chain policies affecting trilateral and regional economic security such as international trade, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, and the CHIPS and Science Act; ▲ Strengthening of trilateral cooperation on North Korea issues; and ▲ enhancing bilateral relations between the U.S. and Korea, Korea and Japan, and the U.S. and Japan.

The Korea-U.S.-Japan TLEP has been held twice per year since its founding in 2003. The discussions and outcomes of the meetings are kept confidential to encourage an open sharing of opinions among legislators from the three countries. The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly intends to continue participating in TLEP to enhance cooperation among the three nations with a view to responding effectively to regional challenges.
