Speaker Kim Jin-pyo visits Myeongdong Cathedral to offer condolences on the death of former Pope Benedict XVI on behalf of the National Assembly of Korea

Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Kim Jin-pyo on Jan. 2 visited the memorial altar of the Myeongdong Cathedral in Seoul to express his condolences on the death of former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who died on December 31 (Vatican time) at the age of 95.

After paying his final respects, Speaker Kim headed to the Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul and held a meeting with Archbishop of Seoul Peter Chung Soon-taick.

Born on April 16, 1927, in the Bavaria region of Germany, Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger was named the Archbishop of Munich and Freising in 1977. He was then named Prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith by then-Pope John Paul II in 1981. Following Pope John Paul II’s death in 2005, Ratzinger was elected the 265th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, selecting the name Benedict XVI. He resigned in February 2013, after eight years, for health reasons.

With a keen interest in the Korean Peninsula, Pope Benedict XVI elevated former Archbishop of Seoul Nicolas Cheong Jin-suk to Cardinal in February 2006. Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan was taught by the Pope when he was studying at Münster University in Germany. In February 2007, Pope Benedict XVI, in his letter to then-Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, said he would pray for the reunion of separated families of the two Koreas. In July 2009, former President Lee Myung-bak visited the Vatican to meet with the Pontiff, and invited him to Korea as part of efforts to draw his attention to the divided country.

Speaker Kim was joined on his visit to the memorial altar by Chief of Staff to the Speaker Park Kyung-mee and Senior Secretary for Political Affairs Cho Kyung-ho.
