Speaker Kim meets with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Al-Thani

National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo met with Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani during a conference call on August 17, during which they exchanged views on expanding economic cooperation and Korea’s bid to host World Expo 2030 in Busan.

Speaker Kim stressed that, since forging diplomatic ties in 1974, Korea and Qatar have maintained excellent cooperative relations in the areas of energy and construction. He expressed his desire to see the same close cooperation come to fruition in other areas as well.

Deputy Prime Minister Al-Thani reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to continue to be a stable energy supplier to Korea and thanked Korean contractors that are involved in a Qatari construction project known to be the largest in the Middle East.

Speaker Kim asked the Deputy Prime Minister for his support for Korean businesses’ participation in Qatar National Vision 2030 using their technological prowess and experience in the cutting-edge semiconductor, electric vehicle, and hydrogen sectors. He also expressed his wish that the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), in which Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed is the Chairman, increase investment in oustanding businesses in Korea.

※ A mid- to long-term development plan launched in October 2008, Qatar National Vision 2030 aims to transform Qatar into an advanced society by 2030. Its goals are divided into four pillars: economic, social, human, and environmental development.

A member of the Qatar royal family and the third highest-ranking minister in the Qatar government, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani also chairs the Qatar Investment Authority, which manages Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund valued at USD 450 billion (ninth largest in the world), and could be used to support increased Qatar investment to Korea.

Deputy Prime Minister Al-Thani said the QIA has already invested in telecom and consumer goods businesses in Korea and will expand investment into other areas such as finance, IT, and agricultural technology, where Korea stands at the leading edge. He also said that Qatar may be able to provide facilities and infrastructure for Korean businesses that come to do business in Qatar or other Middle Eastern countries.

Meanwhile, Speaker Kim asked for Deputy Prime Minister Al-Thani’s support for Korea’s bid to attract World Expo 2030 to the southern port city of Busan, to which he replied that Qatar remains committed to both nations supporting each other on the international stage and that a favorable outcome is expected for Korea since are no equally strong candidates.

Participants in the call also included Khalid bin Ebrahim Al-Hamar, Qatar Ambassador to Korea, Khalid bin Fahad Al Khater, Director of Policy and Planning Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Yousef Laram, Director of International Organizations Department of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Speaker Kim’s Executive Officer Park Kyung-mi, Senior Secretary for Public Relations Ko Jae-hak, Ambassador Cho Ku-rae, and Director-General of International Affairs Hwang Seung-ki.
