Korea-EU Parliamentary Diplomacy Forum organizes
the 'Korea-EU Inter-Parliamentary Conference'

-The European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula (DKOR) will attend the conference on September 20

-Attendees will discuss Korea-EU relations, political developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the international community, and means of strengthening bilateral cooperation

The Korea-EU Parliamentary Diplomacy Forum on Sept. 20 held the Korea-EU Inter-Parliamentary Conference at the National Assembly Reception Room.

The conference marks the first official meeting held between the parliaments of Korea and the EU since the "21st Conference of Parliaments of Korea and the EU," organized on Nov. 4, 2019, in Brussels, Belgium. The main agenda items were: 1) current political and economic status of Korea-EU relations; 2) political developments on the Korean Peninsula and in the international community; and 3) ways to reinforce bilateral cooperation.

National Assembly Member Lee Sang-min stated in his opening remarks that the conference is expected to elevate the strategic partnership between Korea and the EU to new heights and reinforce bilateral cooperation, and is even more meaningful in view of the upcoming 60th anniversary, in 2023, of diplomatic ties between Korea and the EU. He added that the two sides should continue to team up to tackle the global challenges of poverty, climate change, and economic polarization.

DKOR Chair Lukas Mandl stated that the Russia-Ukraine war has not only displayed the horrors of such conflicts but also brought to light Korea’s resolute efforts to rise from the ashes of war and preserve peace.

The two sides also shared their concerns about the energy crisis spawned by sanctions against Russia and the unstable supplies of fuels in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, and discussed possible changes to international systems necessitated by this crisis.

They also agreed on the importance of an all-party approach toward climate-change response measures during a Q&A session about carbon neutrality execution and energy efficiency strategies.

The two sides also held in-depth discussions on issues including relations with China, cyber security, political systems, the global economy in the post-COVID-19 era, and beef imports from EU member states, while underlining the need for continued cooperation on issues that mutually affect Korea and the EU.

Attendees from the Korean parliament included National Assembly Members Lee Sang-min (Democratic Party of Korea), Park Young-soon (Democratic Party of Korea), Park Sung-joon (Democratic Party of Korea), Jang Chul-min (Democratic Party of Korea), Park Soo-young (People Power Party), and Her Eun-a (People Power Party). Those from the EU Parliament included the DKOR* members (headed by Lukas Mandl) as well as the EU's Ambassador to Korea Maria Castillo Fernandez.
