Secretary General Kim Min-ki oversees a formal briefing

on the National Assembly’s 2024 Ulchi civil defense exercise

National Assembly Secretary General Kim Min-ki presided over a formal briefing on the National Assembly’s 2024 Ulchi civil defense exercise on August 19 at the National Assembly's comprehensive situation room.

The Ulchi Exercise, which was integrated with the Korean military’s independent exercises under the “Ulchi Taeguk Exercise” in 2019, has been conducted in conjunction with the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercise, Ulchi Freedom Shield (UFS), since 2022.

At the briefing, attended by the heads of National Assembly support organizations, directors general and directors of the National Assembly Secretariat’s offices and bureaus, and chiefs of staff of committees, the Deputy Director-General for Emergency Planning provided updates on: ▲ current exercise situation and the National Assembly’s emergency preparedness procedures; ▲ discussions on major tasks to be addressed during the Ulchi Exercise; and ▲ plans for the exercise’s practical training phase.

Secretary General Kim Min-ki received the briefing and emphasized the active participation of all assembly staff in the cyberterrorism response drills and integrated defense training of the Ulchi Exercise period, saying “In a national crisis, it is essential for the National Assembly to maintain its core legislative functions and stabilize the lives of the people.”

Alongside the mandatory emergency recall drill for essential public servants, the National Assembly plans to conduct practical training exercises, including cyberterrorism response drills and integrated defense drills, for all staff during the Ulchi Exercise.

Following the briefing, National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik visited the Comprehensive Situation Room and Cybersecurity Center to encourage staff.

The National Assembly expects that the drills conducted during the Ulchi Exercise will help improve its response system in the event of an emergency and enhance the staff’s awareness and ability to respond to a national crisis.
