National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik of the Republic of the Korea met on August 16 with Deputy Prime Minister for Economy and Minister of Economy and Finance Choi Sang-mok in the Speaker’s office.
During the meeting, Speaker Woo expressed concern about the current economic situation and the severe burden on the people, citing the recent trends of high inflation and interest rates with the negative economic growth in the second quarter.
He noted, “With growing concerns about tax revenue deficits this year, following last year, I am worried that the government’s emphasis on fiscal soundness may be making people’s lives more difficult. Given the uncertain outlook for an economic recovery in the near future, active fiscal investment is needed to support people’s livelihoods.”
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Choi stated, “The government’s goal is to recover the livelihoods of the people and the economy. We hope for strong interest and support from the National Assembly for the government’s tax law revisions and budget proposal.”
Attendees at the meeting included Kim Jin-myung, Director General of the Planning and Coordination Office at the Ministry of Economy and Finance; Jo O-seop, Chief of Staff to the Speaker; Park Tae-hyung, Deputy Secretary-General for Administrative Affairs; Kwak Hyun, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs; Lee Won-jung, Senior Secretary for Policy; and Park Tae-seo, Senior Secretary for Public Relations to the Speaker.
