- Speaker Woo requests support for heightened cooperation in the semiconductor and AI sectors

as well as for peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula

- Ambassador van der Vliet anticipates cooperation on the Netherlands’ new reactor project and

collaboration in the wind and hydrogen energy sectors

National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik of the Republic of Korea met on August 1 with Peter van der Vliet, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Korea, in the Speaker’s office. The two countries have maintained a strategic partnership based on shared values such as freedom, democracy, and human rights since establishing diplomatic ties in 1961.

In welcoming Ambassador van der Vliet, Speaker Woo congratulated the Netherlands on the inauguration of a new government and expressed hopes for the continued development of their strategic partnership under the new administration.

He then highlighted the active bilateral economic cooperation, noting that the Netherlands ranked first among European Union member countries in investment in the Republic of Korea last year. “I hope that more companies from both nations enter each other’s markets, contributing to economic growth and job creation,” he added.

Speaker Woo also requested Dutch interest and support in specific areas, including: △ the semiconductor industry’s value chain, in which both countries excel in manufacturing and equipment production; and △ cooperation on the upcoming 2nd Responsible AI in the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit, which they will co-host in Seoul next month.

In addition, Speaker Woo mentioned Ambassador van de Vliet’s concurrent role as Ambassador to North Korea, and asked for “efforts toward peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula” amid the current instability in inter-Korean relations.

In response, Ambassador van der Vliet noted the significant similarities between their countries, such as democratic, economic and technological advancements. He underscored the need to further strengthen cooperation in areas such as economic and supply chain security, wind power, and hydrogen energy issues.

Ambassador van der Vliet also cited the Republic of Korea’s recent successful winning of a nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic and expressed hope for bilateral cooperation in the Netherlands’ ongoing reactor project.

Attendees at the meeting included Jo O-seop, Chief of Staff to the Speaker; Park Tae-seo, Senior Secretary for Public Relations to the Speaker; Jeong Woon-jin, Ambassadorial Advisor to the Speaker for Foreign Affairs; and Koo Hyun-woo, Director General of the International Affairs and Protocol Bureau.
