Speaker Woo Won-shik of the Republic of Korea’s National Assembly on July 9 held a luncheon meeting with lawmakers to advocate for the creation of a permanent Climate Crisis Committee during the 22nd National Assembly.

The meeting followed a May 10 press conference during which the then-elected 22nd National Assembly members — including Lee So-young and Park Jee-hye (Democratic Party of Korea), Kim Yong-tae and Kim So-hee (People Power Party), Seo Wang-jin (Rebuilding Korea Party), Chun Ha-ram (Reform Party), Yoon Jong-o (Progressive Party), Yong Hye-in (Basic Income Party), Han Chang-min (Social Democratic Party), and Kim Jong-min (New Future Party) — proposed forming a “special committee on the climate crisis” as a permanent standing committee. They suggested granting it the authority to review bills relating to significant climate crisis laws, including the Framework Act on Carbon Neutrality, and the power to examine and approve budgets and settlements for the Climate Response Fund. Elected members from all parties promised bipartisan cooperation on the matter.

The luncheon was organized to gather members’ opinions on this proposal, while proclaiming the 22nd National Assembly's commitment to addressing climate change and seeking bipartisan cooperation on forming the committee.

In his opening remarks, Speaker Woo expressed gratitude to all attending members by saying: “The bipartisan cooperation on the issue of ‘responding to the climate crisis’, even amidst the current deadlock in the National Assembly, clearly demonstrates how the 22nd National Assembly regards this critical issue.”

He further underscored, “The climate crisis is no longer in the distant future but is a present threat to us. Achieving ‘carbon neutrality’ to combat climate change has become a matter of survival.”

Speaker Woo concluded his remarks by urging members, “Regardless of ideological and political difference, let us not waver in cooperating to protect the lives of our citizens and secure the future of the Republic of Korea in response to the climate crisis. Let us swiftly establish a permanent climate committee.”
