Speaker Woo Won-shik goes on-site to hear the voice of the people
- On-site Civil Complaint Center has been running every Sunday since 2021
- Woo stresses need to go into field to listen directly to the people and hear their unfiltered voices
- Encourages all National Assembly members to create avenues to meet directly with the public
Speaker of the Republic of Korea’s 22nd National Assembly Woo Won-shik on June 9 successfully concluded the week’s operations of the “On-Site Civil Complaint Center” at the Gyeongchun Line Forest Park in Seoul, the on-site complaint office he has run every Sunday since 2021, even before his inauguration as the chief of the National Assembly. Listening attentively to residents’ concerns, complaints and policy suggestions, Speaker Woo has so far responded to more than 1,150 of 1,450 total complaints collected since opening the center.
“To hear the public’s unfiltered voices, we have to go out into the field and listen directly to the people,” Woo said, adding “I will keep operating the on-site civil complaint office to request all National Assembly members to create avenues to meet directly with the public.”
Speaker Woo stressed that such field-centered legislative activities are one way to address recently intensifying social conflicts in the country. In his acceptance speech on June 5, Woo proposed the following three measures to resolve conflicts in Korean society:
▲ Adhering to agreed standards despite differing opinions;
▲ Enhancing field legislative activities; and
▲ Making the National Assembly a platform for social dialogue.
