The Republic of Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo hosted a dinner with top diplomats of the G7 countries and the European Union’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea at the Speaker’s residence on January 11. During the dinner, they discussed enhancing solidarity and cooperation between Korea and the G7 nations through parliamentary diplomacy amid an array of complex global crises.

* G7 nations: United States, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Canada

Speaker Kim stated at the dinner, “International cooperation to address global issues such as global supply chains, food security, health care, and climate change is becoming increasingly difficult due to deepening geopolitical conflicts.” He then added, “In this era of complex global crises, there is an increased need for nations that share the same universal values to cooperate.”

The Speaker elaborated, “The Republic of Korea has been cooperating with the G7 to address pending global issues and will continue to strive for enhanced cooperation. The National Assembly of Korea will actively support the diplomatic activities of you ambassadors.”

Responding to the Speaker, EU Ambassador to ROK Maria Castillo-Fernandez raised her expectations for more robust cooperation in the environmental, digital, and security sectors based on the results achieved by the European Union and the Republic of Korea in celebration of the 60th anniversary of EU-ROK diplomatic relations. She then mentioned the EU’s R&D innovation program and urged Korea’s participation to promote better collaboration with the EU.

U.S. Ambassador to the ROK Philip S. Goldberg also underlined the importance of seeking bilateral, trilateral, and multilateral cooperation, saying that countries will be able to better cope with issues through cooperation among nations sharing the same values amid a deterioration of international relations. He then expressed his gratitude to Speaker Kim for his strong support for Korea-U.S.-Japan relations.

Among those attending the dinner were Japanese Ambassador to the ROK Koichi Aiboshi; U.S. Ambassador to the ROK Philip S. Goldberg; EU Ambassador to the ROK Maria Castillo-Fernandez; French Ambassador to the ROK Philippe Bertho; German Ambassador to the ROK Georg Wilfried Schmidt; Italian Ambassador to the ROK Emilia Gatto; Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy Seoul Gareth Weir; and Minister-Counsellor at the Embassy of Canada to the ROK John Zimmerman (in order of presentation of credentials).

From the Korean side, attendees included Secretary General of the National Assembly Baek Jae-hyun; Chief of Staff to the Speaker Kim Kyo-sik; Ambassador Jeong Woon-jin; and Director General of the International Affairs and Protocol Bureau Hwang Seung-gi.
