The top issue of their conversation was the ROK national football team’s sudden departure from Austria. The team had been staying in Vienna for about two weeks for friendly matches with the national teams of Mexico and Qatar, but six of its players and two of its staff tested positive for COVID-19.
Asking for the Austrian government’s swift authorization of the ROK team’s departure, Speaker Park said that Seoul was prepared to send a chartered flight immediately. In Austria, persons confirmed as having COVID-19 and their close contacts are required to self-isolate for ten days.
Ambassador Angerholzer expressed his regret about the players’ and staff members’ test results, and wished them a fast recovery. He added that the Austrian authorities, as well as himself, would do their best to help the Korean athletes return home as soon as possible.
Also among their topics of discussion was inter-parliamentary exchange and cooperation.
The ambassador said that the president of Austria’s National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, was well aware that the ROK has achieved remarkable development over the past several decades, adding that the Austrian parliamentary speaker was expecting to pay an official visit to the ROK soon.
Speaker Park noted that while the prime ministers and the presidents of both countries have exchanged visits and phone conversations several times, there has been little exchange at the parliamentary level. He said he would welcome President Sobotka, and that the International Affairs Bureau will help arrange specific schedules.
