National Assembly attends 2024 Parliamentary Conference on the WTO

- Held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on Feb 25

- Attended by National Assembly members Kim Hong-gul and Shin Hyun-young (Democratic Party of Korea)

- Discussions held on ‘Shaping and strengthening a multilateral trading system that delivers for all’

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (Speaker Kim Jin-pyo) attended the 2024 Annual Session of the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO, held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on February 25 (local time). National Assembly members Kim Hong-gul and Shin Hyun-young (Democratic Party of Korea) comprised the Korean delegation at the conference.

Established in 2002, the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO is a joint initiative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the European Parliament. This year’s conference was held in close cooperation with the UAE Federal National Council. Agenda topics included ‘shaping and strengthening a multilateral trading system that delivers for all’; ‘trade and climate change: a win-win interaction’; and ‘digital trade in the era of resilient economies.’

The Korean delegation listened attentively to delegations’ presentations, interacted with government negotiators and WTO officials, and exchanged views and experiences with colleagues from other parliaments at the sessions concerned with international trade, finance, and development. At the end of the conference, the parliamentarians adopted a document containing a commitment to multilateral cooperation among parliaments based on WTO rules, premised on the importance of trade in the global economy.

During their visit to Abu Dhabi, the Korean delegation met with Korea’s ambassador to the UAE Yoo Jeh-seung on Feb. 24 to discuss current issues and future developments in Korea-UAE bilateral relations. Minister for Trade at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Cheong In-kyo also attended the meeting, where he provided a briefing on key issues and preparations for the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference and shared his views on the Parliamentary Conference agenda.
